La Grange Garden Club 2010 President’s Report
Fall District Meeting, October 18, 2010

The year 2010 is nearly history and our club has every reason to be proud as we have accomplished many of our goals.

With the help of garden club member, Joe Coelho, Associate Biology Professor at Quincy University, we were able to tag over 100 monarch butterflies. This tagging project is a research project through Kansas University to study the migration of the monarch. We were able to expand our education of the metamorphosis of the monarch by introducing the process to 5 preschool groups. Each group raised a monarch butterfly from a tiny caterpillar to a monarch butterfly. It was a very inspiring experience even to the adult teachers if the preschoolers that had never witnessed the process before this. These preschoolers were also involved with a spring planting project with members of our club helping them plant flowers seeds for Mother’s Day.

Our club members have started a “Welcome to La Grange” project. After gathering materials from various businesses and organizations, we put together welcome baskets with the materials and a plant from the club. We have delivered 9 baskets so far and a plan to make more deliveries to welcome new people to La Grange before the end of the year.

We have created a hosta bed at Drs. Ellery Memorial Park and decorated the Blue Star By-Way Memorial Marker there on patriotic holidays. We continue to weed, mulch, water and maintain that park. At Washington Park in La Grange, one of our members and her boy scout troop prepare the soil, plant flowers, mulch, water and weed.

In addition to these projects, our club enjoyed a beekeeping program, a dragonfly presentation, a trip to the gardens of Nauvoo and a trip to Deer Ridge Conservation Area in Lewis County to observe native plants.

Respectfully, Linda Hess, 2009 - 2011 President
